Material Cultures is a not-for-profit design and research organization working at the intersection of natural materials, construction and technology. Co-directed by Paloma Gormley, Summer Islam and George Massoud, its mission is to work towards a circular and bioregional construction industry which is integrated into regenerative and socially just systems. Advocating for the reintegration of architecture and agriculture, Material Cultures understands buildings as irrevocably linked to landscapes of extraction. Material Cultures works across different scales developing materials and prototypical buildings to look strategically at the adaptation of the landscapes and supply chains from which they emerge. They design buildings working to integrate circular and bio-based materials and minimally processed minerals into efficient construction systems.

Alongside this, Material Cultures carries out strategic research into how these practices can be applied at scale and how they relate to a broader move towards regenerative land management practices. They run their own construction skills programme, MAKE, alongside research and teaching in partnership with different institutions and community organizations. In 2023, they published a book called Material Reform, which assembles a series of essays exploring the cultures, systems, and infrastructures that shape the architectural industry and the destructive ecologies it fosters.
